WHAT WE DO

Read about safe browsing on the web.

Surviving a relationship with an abusive partner requires considerable skill and resourcefulness. The problem of domestic violence cannot be resolved by effecting changes in the victim's behavior. The problem is the offender's conduct – his/her coercive, controlling, and violent behaviors.

Although the victim's actions cannot be expected to stop the abuse, and although the abuser remains solely responsible for his or her use of violence, battered victims can find ways to reduce the level of risk and danger in their lives and to reclaim freedom of choice and action.

This is a guide to help you think about how you might live with or leave a violent situation. Women have told us that these things have helped them keep safe. You will know what is safest for you and your children. Trust your instincts.

For each part of the safety plan ask yourself "If I do this (or do not do this) which risks go up, which go down, and which new risks arise?"
