With the severe state and federal government funding cuts Between Friends has experienced this year, your donation is even more important. Anna’s story below illustrates how your contribution makes an enormous difference in the lives of individuals impacted by domestic violence.

Anna is a dedicated and hard-working mother who recently immigrated to the U.S. Shortly after immigrating, her husband became abusive. He pushed her down the stairs breaking several bones in her body. He also incurred thousands of dollars in credit card debt in her name. Distraught and penniless, Anna turned to Between Friends for guidance.

Anna and her three children began seeing our counselors through which she learned of our legal services. With the help of our court advocates, Anna obtained an Order of Protection providing Anna and her children the ability to stay in their house without her husband. As a result, they did not become homeless, as women often do after leaving an abusive household, and her children were given a sense of security and safety in their own home.

Anna also came to our free legal clinic to solicit legal advice. Through the legal clinic, Anna secured a lawyer who is now helping her file for divorce and maintain custody of her kids.

Your contribution will allow us to provide more counseling and court advocacy services to individuals like Anna so that families can heal from the trauma of abuse.

Every Dollar Counts

$250 allows four Chicago teenagers to go through a nine-week workshop on how to build healthy relationships- critical in stopping the cycle of domestic violence.

$100 provides time for a court advocate to stand beside a client while talking to the judge in the courtroom to secure an Order of Protection against her abuser, which can help keep her and her children safe for up to two years.

$50 will provide an art therapy session for a child struggling to cope with fear and isolation of domestic violence and help process the trauma of his or her experiences.
