"Between Friends helped me learn that asking for help is bravery, not failure. You are shown how to stop feeling like a victim and start being a survivor."

"Learning that I was truly being abused, learning that [the abuse] was real was a liberating, life enhancing experience."

"There is a strong supportive network, a feeling that you don’t have to start every story with an explanation of how such a thing could have happened. You can check your shame at the door."

"[With] help from Between Friends, I divorced my abusive spouse, sought healing, and recently married a wonderful friend who is warm, supportive, encouraging and absolutely in love with me."

"Knowing there is a place to go where they will help you begin healing and guide you through the process of rebuilding your life – this is what a frightened woman needs to take that first step."

Adriana's Story, 25 years old

"When I was 16 and 17 I was in an emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive relationship with my boyfriend. I'd been to therapy before in order to work on the issues I had surviving and thriving after this abuse. Although I no longer had flashbacks and I was able to realize that this abuse wasn't my fault, I still had issues in romantic relationship[s]. I felt like every relationship I got into was bad for me. At this point, I decided to seek counseling again."

"I believe that receiving counseling from Between Friends really helped me. My counselor helped me create goals in order to make my relationships healthier, such as being more proactive with letting others know how I am feeling. This way, I won't let my frustrations go unrealized. I enjoyed having someone who I felt comfortable talking with about my abuse history; I felt that I could tell my counselor anything and she would not judge me or blame me for my behavior or opinions. I also believe that she has given me some good insights into what healthy relationships feel like. After coming to counseling with Between Friends, I feel like a much happier, well-adjusted person."

"You have taught me what an unhealthy relationship is, and what a healthy relationship is. But most importantly, you have taught me how to help a friend in need."

"You have helped me to have another outlook on life ... knowing that life obstacles are going to be challenging, but it's [about how] you as a person react. You teach me how to be a better person to myself and my peers."

"You taught me a lot of useful information, and I will always remember you for it. You also helped me deal with issues I never thought treatable."

"The movies and conversation that we [saw] and talked about really helped me understand how relationships go. Now I know if I see any signs [of abuse] to get out of that relationship."
